Pirate Treasure

One of the memorable movies of the 80s for me is The Goonies. Not only were the main characters in my general peer bracket, but secret maps and adventure were involved. This movie was such an icon, that even now it has an impressive following. I enjoyed this movie, but the real value of The Goonies for me, was being introduced to the music of Cyndi Lauper. This Queen of Rock is still kickin’ it today. On my wishlist of music albums to purchase is “The Body Acoustic”.

From the swampy, backwoods groove of “Money Changes Everything” and striking reconception of “She-Bop” through the shadows of “Water’s Edge” and the gospel elevation of “I’ll Be Your River,” The Body Acoustic is all about emotion, deep and raw. It’s about fearlessness, with feeling always taking top priority over polish. It’s about America too, in its connection to the roots of modern music. excerpted from: Cyndi Lauper biography (well worth the read).

Yet another movie that’s been covered by the blog before… hm. I appreciate that you’re adding to the original post about the movie, however.

Now, I may lament the fact that the same topics seem to come up again, but I also wanted to say that I’ve really been enjoying your posts since you started contributing to this blog, Deb. :)

Karin, we have a few new members to club, and while we were readers before, that doesn’t mean duplicate topics are off limits. In fact, I kind of look forward to putting my own personal spin on things, especially since I am about 10++ years older than past club members. I think Deb also has her perspective on things as well, so yes, maybe same topic, but I think you’ll see we have something a little different to say just the same. Either way, we appreciate you sticking with us as we are developing our own voice over here.

Thanks for the comments Karine, they’re much appreciated. As for covering a topic more than once, whew. If we limited ourselves to what others haven’t yet written about, it would be ironic to be writing in a retro blog ;)

Perhaps you have a favorite movie from the 80s you’d like to see covered?

I can totally understand wanting to put your own spin and offer your opinion, Tammy. And while duplicate topics are not off limit either, I was a little surprised that no reference was made to them. It felt a little like you took over the blog and discarded anything that may have been done before.

As a reader, it’s disconcerting. And while I enjoy the blog, I’m not sure I want to keep reading about the same things over and over, even if it’s a different outlook, etc. You’re presuming that your readers want to read several outlooks on the same things. Is there so little to talk about the 80’s that the blog has to keep talking about the same movies?

Deb - you’re welcome. about a favorite movie - there are many! Mission, Sex, Lies and Videotape, Tootsie, Amadeus, Out of Africa, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Rain Man, A Room with a View, Dangerous Liaisons, Willow, The Princess Bride … just a few off the top of my head. And what about ET… I don’t remember any posts about ET! :)

Several of those movies make my own ‘favorites’ list, so you can look forward to reading about them.

On the dead horse topic of duplicating ideas, topics, movies, whatever in our writing…

Tammy and I will continue to put our own spin on things, and if that means there are some topics that receive more coverage than others, it merely indicates that one of us happens to have a certain fondness for the subject matter. At the same time, blogging is a bit of balancing- so when people contribute some positive feedback on what they like and what they’d like to see more of, then it gives us as writers an idea of what we can pull out of our bag of tricks to entertain your day with.

I’m a bit new to this medium, and learning the software. It’s not an excuse of some kind, but every week brings a new “aha!” moment. Such as last week when I discovered that the “search box” on the blog, searches the entries on the blog. I’d assumed it was an internet search box and never tried it. Handy feature though, and something I’m glad to make use of. Because, while I will no doubt cover topics in the future that have already been covered, I do like to write about things that haven’t been touched upon.

And that’s all I have to say on that. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a done subject.

Karin - I’m not required to refer to other posts. Not that I might not do that, but that’s not a hard and fast blog rule.

I was a reader of this blog too before I started writing for it, but so what? Obviously, nothing has been discarded. If that were the case, there’s be no archives, right?

If I want to write 10 posts about Prince, then that will be 10 times more information. Heck, I wouldn’t mind a Prince category ;)

If you’d prefer not to read what I write, then that’s your choice just like I can write about whatever 80s topic I want to. That’s what blogging is all about.

In answer to this comment - what’s the rush? Also, this isn’t really an accurate statement if actualy read the content of each post you’ll see they aren’t the same.

I’m with Deb on this - stick a fork in me…I’m done talking about this…blog on…

Deb : thank you for your answer, at least now I know what to expect. I was merely expressing my surprise, especially since I do like what you’re doing with the blog.

Tammy : you made your point clear. As for refering to posts, I don’t see why that should be a requirement, that’s just something I personally enjoy.

I’m sorta new to this medium as well. And I try to express both my pleasure and occasional disappointment as feedback because I’m somewhat delusional that it might be more constructive than ‘great post!’. English is not my first language and I’m bound to offend when I don’t mean to just because I lack finesse in that language. Sadly enough, my original comment was trying to be positive.
