A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story

You knew we couldn’t get much closer to Christmas before I mentioned this 80’s classic movie, right? Watching A Christmas Story was one of the yearly winter traditions in our house. How could you not feel bad when Ralphie had to make his appearence in the giant pink bunny outfit? And when all the adults around him told him that he couldn’t get his Red Ryder BB gun because he would shoot his eye out, you could feel the injustice flowing. And then when he DID shoot his eye out?!? (Sorry, did I ruin …read more

80’s Contribution to the Christmas Carol

80’s Contribution to the Christmas Carol

Generations of poets and composers have created some of the most beautiful songs of all time. Included among these are the traditional Christmas carols of Away in a Manger, What Child is This?, Silent Night, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman. And what did the great decade of the 1980’s contribute to this list of fine aural pleasures? That’s right, you guessed it (or you just looked at the picture, cheater), Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.
Yep, that’s right, the song about, “the blue and silver candles that would just have matched the hair in grandma’s …read more

Gooniewear

Gooniewear

Still looking for the perfect gift for that child of the 80’s on your shopping list? You can’t go wrong with this Goonies inspired Truffle Shuffle t-shirt. Who wouldn’t be proud to show up in this for the office Christmas party?
Okay, so now you know that it’s best that I work from home in my pajamas. But still, I wonder how many images of the memories of our youth can be found plastered on the front of a $20 t-shirt. Odd. I shall begin the quest for the answer.
In the meantime, is someone …read more

80s Movies Monday-Best of the Worst #9

80s Movies Monday-Best of the Worst #9

This is our second week worth of picks from Common Sense PR writer Eric Eggerston. While Eric’s first pick didn’t seem to ruffle any feathers (as in, “Yeah, you’re right, that WAS a bad movie. Good pick.”), this one is sure to grab a few objections. In fact, I know one reader who may just implode. Hmmm….that would be fun, and would make for a great post! So, here are Eric’s thoughts on The Goonies and why it deserves to be listed with the Best of the Worst of the 80’s movies:
First big budget movie …read more

Too Close for Comfort

Too Close for Comfort

It must be 80’s Sitcoms Theme Song week here, because I keep getting drawn back to these videos on YouTube.
Too Close for Comfort came up when I was with my sister and my friend playing the Trivial Pursuit 80’s Edition game a few months back. I was so frustrated because I could not come up with the name of the show. I just kept picturing Ted Knight with that dumb cow puppet on this hand. And there they are, Ted and the puppet, in the opening credits.
Enjoy:

That Phil Collins—He’s Groovy

That Phil Collins—He’s Groovy

Ever since I wrote the post about the upcoming Genesis tour, I’ve had Groovy Kind of Love floating in and out of my brain.
The Phil Collins version was released my freshman year in high school and was the theme for our Homecoming Dance. I can’t hear that song without being teleported to a dimly lit cafeteria draped in blue and white crepe paper.
I also remember my parents hearing it come on the radio and saying, “Why are they playing that song so slow?” As with many things from our childhood, we got the remake while they got …read more

Mr. Belvedere Theme Song

Mr. Belvedere Theme Song

Mr. Belvedere was one of those shows that I remember our whole family sitting down to watch together. My main memories of this show:

Seeing the Pittsburgh sign in the opening credits. I thought it was cool because we had a lot of family living there.
Thinking it was odd that there was a man named “Lynn“.
Thinking that the littlest kid got away with an awful lot for being such a brat.

So, for your viewing pleasure, the theme song to Mr. Belvedere. Scary how well I remembered the lyrics!

And for a long version from later in the series, click here. …read more

80s Movies Monday-Best of the Worst #8

Here we are back to the Best of the Worst of the 80’s movies. Thanks for sticking with me on this series, even those of you (and you know who you are) who completely disagree with the picks. I have a feeling that this week’s feature is more in line with what you consider a “best of the worst” flick. Or it’s not, and you can just deal.
This is the first of three picks by b5media Business channel blogger, Eric Eggerston. Check him out at Common Sense PR, and at his personal site, Mutually …read more

Yes, U2 looked bad in a mullet…

Yes, U2 looked bad in a mullet…

Yes, U2 (get it? you, too) looked as silly as Bono marching around the dance floor thinking U could dance. Yes, U2 looked goofy in a muscle tee. And, yes, U2 dramatically flipped your hair around trying to look cool (and no, U didn’t succeed, either).
U, however, did not become an internationally known rock star, and continue to be so 20+ years later. (Or so I’m guessing. Don’t think I have many rock stars reading here.)

Good video. Brings back lots of memories (didn’t say they were all good! Oh, the fashion embarrassments of …read more
