Celeb Watch- Harrison Ford
I first encountered Harrison Ford as Han Solo, that brash cocky irreverent rapscallion from Star Wars. He didn’t wave around an awesome lightsaber, or convince anyone to “move along” with his clever Force Powers, but he did fly the Millenium Falcon and win the love of the Princess.
Of the movies he starred in during the 1980s, my personal favorites would have to be Blade Runner (1982)
In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when five replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth.
and The Mosquito Coast (1986).
Allie Fox has never been a man to do things by the book. An avid inventor, he is a troubled genuis given to intense moods and an incredible drive. Seemingly on a whim, he shifts his family to the jungles of Central America, telling his children that America “is gone”. Determined to create a civilization better than the one he has abandoned, Fox’s obsession and mania might pull his family through, or it might pull them apart.
Many people are more familiar with his role as Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford is not just an actor. He’s also a pilot and enjoys being involved in civic activities. As this article in the Appleton Post-Crescent about the Young Eagles highlights.
More than 40,000 pilots have volunteered to support the program, including current program chairman Harrison Ford. The well-known actor and aviator has personally flown 200 Young Eagles and is an outspoken advocate for the program.
“Flying can be a great teacher and motivator for young people,” Ford said. “I encourage my fellow EAA members to give the gift of flight to a young person, especially on International Young Eagles Day. It is certainly an experience you’ll both remember.”
