80’s Lyrics Quiz

Have you seen this 80’s lyrics quiz yet? I’d taken it once before, but, as with most things these days, I don’t think I remembered anymore on it this time than I did the first time!

My final score was 96. I blame a few on spelling errors, a few on those “Dang it, I know it but I can’t come up with it!” moments, and a few that I never would have gotten. Go ahead and take it and head to the comments to let me know how you did!

Jell-o and Bill Cosby

Several of us in my family are down with a nasty virus right now, and Jell-o would be a welcome item on the menu! Can you think of Jell-o and not think of Bill Cosby? I know, I know, I think he was more about Jell-o Pudding than the gelatin, but that’s the best connection I can make for you today.

This commercial makes me think of my dad. He was a big fan of both Jell-o Pudding and Bill Cosby. And it was always a special treat if you caught him grabbing a Jell-o Pudding Pop, because then you got one, too!

80’s Stars on American Idol?

I got a chance to get out for a bit today, and I took the opportunity to call up Bald Man and get out for lunch. Just the two of us. It was fantastic.

Anyway, as most of you probably don’t know, Bald Man loves to sing. As you probably also don’t know, he’s aurally challenged (read as: doesn’t really know whether or not he’s in tune when he’s singing). It is a fact that he’s well aware of, so I’m not outing him here or anything. Or maybe I am, but he can take it.

Anyway (wow, I say that a lot)…..we were stopping for coffee before our lunch date was over, and he was singing kinda. He made some comment about how he could still get on American Idol and we made a little joke about the girl this season who auditioned KNOWING that she couldn’t sing. Did you see her audition? It was her grand idea to be the first American Idol who couldn’t sing, and who they taught to sing.

I said something to the effect of, “Yeah, an American Idol who can’t sing.”

Bald Man’s reply, “Two words for you…..Milli Vanilli.”

Heh, yeah…I’m sure Simon Cowell would have had a field day with them. But I did love that Girl You Know It’s True album. I have it on cassette. I think I even did a karaoke bit to it in high school. I seem to remember singing it at a pool party. Now, I just get Blame it on the Rain stuck in my head when it’s, well, raining.

80’s Retro Arcade Games for Free!

I know, I know, you just have too much time on your hands, don’t you? You look at your week’s schedule and think, “Wow. I just don’t know what I’m going to do with myself this week. There are just tons and tons of big white spaces indicating huge blocks of time with which I don’t know what to do!”

Well, do I have the solution for you. The b5media forum arcade. Oh yes. What, you ask, is the b5media forum arcade? Thank you for asking. It is the most monumental time waster, but it is fun.

So, if you’d like to whittle away precious hours of your life trying to beat the retro games scores of those of us b5 bloggers (and new forum members as well) who have already wasted our best years in front of the computer, click on over to the main site for b5media, then click on the forums tab. This will lead you to the part where you come up with a clever username and let us know as much or little about you that you think is safe for us to possess, and then join in the arcade fun! Oh yeah, and introduce yourself in the forums and join all of the wackos, erm, my colleagues there. We really do have some fun conversations going on there, a few of which are actually useful.

Top 20 Shows of the 80’s

Over at Brohans.com, there is compiled a list of the top 20 shows of the 1980s. While they do include the first shows that I thought of offhand, (Growing Pains, The Cosby Show, Cheers, etc.), there are a few notable absences. No Family Ties? No Dallas? Hill Street Blues? And, really, did they not think of Pee-wee’s Playhouse? (Okay, so I’m joking on that one.)

Theme Song Thursday: Kids Incorporated

Kids Incorporated. One of those Saturday morning shows (at least I think that’s when it aired, when else would it have?) that I remember loving, but I no longer have any idea why I liked it or what the plot was even. Kids dancing, that’s what I remember. You can head over here to see what Wikipedia remembers about it.

Enjoy the theme song, and watch for Fergie (Stacey Ferguson) of the Black Eyed Peas. She’s the first one to be credited. Crazy, huh?

Chips Ahoy and the Human League

I am definitely the demographic that the advertisers are trying to hit in the evening drama/sitcom time slot. In addition to the Back to the Future bit, I’m hearing more and more 80’s songs being used in commercials. Apparently, those marketing geniuses think that there are many middle-aged (am I middle aged, yet?) lazy bums sitting around basking in the glow of the boob tube, just waiting to be enticed to a bag of cookies by the sweet sounds of The Human League. Little morsels of chocolatey goodness are just calling out to me from the TV with the sweet lyrics, “Don’t you want me, baby?” Why, yes I do! Let me just run out and snarfle down a bag of cookies.

Yeah, I’m not that easy. Not that I don’t want to be, but my calorie counter would not like a full bag of Chips Ahoy logged into a day’s meals. I’m trying to lose that middle-age poundage, you know?

Chicago Bears and the Superbowl Shuffle, Again?

With the Chicago Bears in the home stretch to the Super Bowl, every child from the 80’s should be walking around with the sweet sounds of The Super Bowl Shuffle streaming through their brains, or is that just for those of us who were living in the Land of Lincoln at the time and couldn’t have gotten away from the song if we’d tried?

It was up at YouTube for a while, but has been pulled down. I’m guessing it has something to do with those pesky copyright laws, but it was fun to see it while it was up, though a bit bittersweet when “Sweetness” Walter Payton appears.

So, I’m rootin’ for Da Bears, how ’bout you?

Theme Song Thursday: Small Wonder

Okay, so I’m gonna go ahead and make a Thursday Theme out of this whole theme song thing. Hmmmm…that was a lot of “th’s” in that sentence. Odd.

Anyway, we both know that you could look these up yourself, but we also both know that you won’t. I will, because it’s my job. (heehee, this is my job. That still floors me.) And besides, if you were to look these up, you’d actually have to remember all of these often ridiculous shows. Unlike me, I’m sure you’ve relieved your poor little brain cells from requiring to retain all of this inane information, and allowed them to move on to bigger and better things, like quantum physics and, um, other smart stuff.

But no, not me. I’ve made my brain cells suffer with the preservation of loads and loads of useless facts and memories. (Surely you believe me. Were I not speaking truth here, I could’ve come up with a much better phrase than, “loads and loads.” Must be all the potty training that has that stuck in my head.)

Okay, so, I’ll get on with it. Small Wonder. Was that the oddest show ever? What was the premise of having the robot girl in the house anyway? I’m sure Wikipedia knows. Let’s go find out:

Small Wonder (1985–1989) was a low-budget half-hour American sitcom, created by Howard Leeds. The storylines revolved around V.I.C.I. (pronounced Vicky), an android in the form of a 10-year-old girl, built by Ted Lawson, an engineer/inventor for United Robotronics, in an effort to assist handicapped children. The robot is taken home by Lawson so that it can mature within a family environment. V.I.C.I.’s features include superhuman strength and speed, an AC outlet under her right arm, a parallel port under her left arm, and an access panel in her back. Despite this, the Lawson family tries to pass the robot off as their adopted daughter.

Like the facelift?

Yeah, so, apparently someone was noticing the fine lines and wrinkles around here that I was so desperately trying to conceal.

What do you think of the new template? Other than the massive amounts of pink (have I mentioned here that I’m not a fan of pink?), I think it’s looking pretty sharp. It was designed by Jonic over at 100yen. Well done, friend! Looovvveee the gradients.
