Chicago Bears and the Super Bowl Shuffle

Chicago Bears and the Super Bowl Shuffle

Bald Man was flipping throught the channels tonight, and kept going back to the Bears/Seahawks game. As a kid who grew up in Illinois in the 1980’s, I really can’t see or hear anything about the Chicago Bears without thinking of the Super Bowl Shuffle.
Crazy little song and video, wasn’t it? And even more strange to be reminded that it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rhythym and Blues Vocal Performance.
I also have to think of Walter Payton, and of the tears in my Dad’s eyes when Payton retired. I didn’t often see my Dad cry, …read more

Welcome back…

Welcome back…

So, I started to write that title and the theme song to Welcome Back, Kotter immediately started playing in my head. I know, I know, that is technically a 70’s show, but it’s a good jumping off point for our journey back to the 80’s.
I’m Kerri, and I’ll be your new guide here through jelly bracelets, rolled-up jeans, The Brat Pack, and all else 80’s inspired. You can also find me writing at another b5media blog, Play Library, and at my personal blog.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey, share your memories, correct mine, and have a …read more

Hair Bands

Hair Bands

Hair bands in the 80s came in all varieties. You could find plain hair elastics and elaborate fabric & floof concoctions, and everything inbetween. Hair Bands also refers to the music genre Glam metal. I don’t think we called it “glam metal” back then, but that’s the label I found attached to the groups which came to mind as I was doing a bit of research for this post (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Guns N Roses, Twisted Sister, Pantera, Ratt, among others). Learn something new every day!

Long hair, wild hair, hair everywhere! …read more

Dana Carvey- here to Pump you Up.

Dana Carvey- here to Pump you Up.

For me, the name Dana Carvey conjures up images of the Wayne’s World movies, but the actor & comedian has appeared in many movies. In the 1980s Dana appeared on Saturday Night Live in several sketches- The Church Lady, Hans and Franz, and Wayne & Garth. He also made appearances in several movies- Halloween II, This Is Spinal Tap, Racing With the Moon, Tough Guys, and Moving. During the 90s he appeared in several more films, and one source says he’ll be in Madagascar -the sequel. (Currently in production and to be released sometime in 2008).

A Boy and his Tiger

A Boy and his Tiger

It is with not a small measure of sadness that I am touching upon this 80s comic strip. Calvin & Hobbes when it appeared in our local newspaper quickly became one of my two favorite comics (the other being The Far Side). Unbeknownst to me prior to C&H, I had an empty space. A void left unfilled. This wacky kid and his stuffed tiger danced across my paper every day, evoking memories of my own inner world as a child. Imaginary friends. Monsters under the bed. Make-believe world that was wildly alive. …read more

80s Cliques

80s Cliques

In the 80s features a wonderful list of 80s cliques along with their definitions. I’m still trying to figure out which one I’d fall into. I think the Nerds:
Also known as “the geeks”. Mostly filled with students of higher academic pursuits, they were generally lumped into one catch all category. Some in this group could actually move into other groups, such as the popular group or the jocks, but would still be labeled as that particular groups nerd. Hackers, when actually at school, would fall into this group as well, since most tended to be the academic sort (at …read more
