Theme Song Thursday: Punky Brewster

Because she was just so darn cute, right? And absolutely the epitome of 80’s fashion.

The only other thing I remember seeing Soleil Moon Frye in was Sabrina, The Teenage Witch (I don’t have cable, it was on, that’s my excuse) with Melissa Joan Hart, though wiki does list a few other things that I should have remembered. The Friends thing does ring a bell.

Did you remember that there was a Punky Brewster cartoon as well? I’d forgotten about that. It appears that Frye was the voice for Punky there, too.

That intro makes me pine for the good old days of TV dinners in the aluminum tin. What can I say? I’m weird, I liked those. Plastic from the microwave just isn’t the same.

80’s Stars on Medium

I usually don’t catch Medium, for some reason I always forget when it’s on. It’s a pretty good show, but my main motivation for watching it is so that I know what the heck’s going on when I head over to read Sheila’s b5 blog, Medium Dreams, which is about the show. She cracks me up, and it’s a good reason to check her out over there. And I did happen to catch it tonight.

What the heck does this have to do with The 80’s Club, you ask? Well, this episode featured one of my favorite 80’s moody/confused/frustrated/angst-filled teens, Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Alan Ruck was perfect in the role of Cameron, I thought, and cracked me up in Spin City. The promo for next week’s Medium showed a clip with Eric Stoltz. He did star in one of my favorite 80s movies of all time. I take it he’s been a visitor to Patricia Arquette before?

If they keep throwing all my favorite 80’s movies stars in the show I may just become a regular!

Theme Song Thursday: Roseanne

Why Roseanne this week, you ask? No other reason than that the Chicago Bears are in the Super Bowl, and that Roseanne was set ~~near Chicago~~ in Illinois. (I thought Lanford was supposed to be near Chicago, but over at Wikipedia, you find that the actualy location of Lanford varied depending on which episode you were watching. Wikipedia also goes into the whole Becky switch thing that went on. That bugged me.) That’s it. Nothing more.

Roseanne entered the sitcom arena with a bang, at least in our house. We watched this show together and laughed every week. By the end of it’s run, though, it just seemed to have overstayed it’s welcome. However, in reruns it can still get a good chuckle out of me. That’s never a bad thing, right?

Without further ado, the theme to Roseanne. I do actually really like their theme song. And please, please, please, if you ever catch me sporting the ‘do on Jackie (Laurie Metcalf, who was born in Illinois and attended ISU with Joan Allen, Gary Sinise, and John Malokovich. Weird.) here, tie me down and shave my head.

Top 20 Shows of the 80’s

Over at Brohans.com, there is compiled a list of the top 20 shows of the 1980s. While they do include the first shows that I thought of offhand, (Growing Pains, The Cosby Show, Cheers, etc.), there are a few notable absences. No Family Ties? No Dallas? Hill Street Blues? And, really, did they not think of Pee-wee’s Playhouse? (Okay, so I’m joking on that one.)

Theme Song Thursday: Charles in Charge

Alright, I really thought I’d posted the Kids Incorporated Theme last Thursday. Not sure where my mind is. Have you seen it lying around? Kind of a gray, mushy, slimy lump of summthin’. No? Okay.

Anyway, lucky you, you get two, yes two, themes in one! In one day, at least.

Scott Baio has been in my head for awhile (oh…’bout 20 years, I’d guess.. ). He was most adorable as Chachi on Happy Days, but lost a little appeal when he married Joanie Cunningham (‘cuz they were real people, you know?). Recently, he popped back in when I was reading about Kristy McNichol. Seems they may have dated in their teen years or something. So, for the last couple of days, the theme to Charles in Charge has been stuck in my head. Yep, for days. And nothing has managed to knock it out of there. Not even Busy Mom was able to trump it, though she did try to with Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. That lasted for a few hours. Then Charles was back.

So, I shall give you an opportunity to be driven crazy by this theme song, too. Enjoy.

Theme Song Thursday: Kids Incorporated

Kids Incorporated. One of those Saturday morning shows (at least I think that’s when it aired, when else would it have?) that I remember loving, but I no longer have any idea why I liked it or what the plot was even. Kids dancing, that’s what I remember. You can head over here to see what Wikipedia remembers about it.

Enjoy the theme song, and watch for Fergie (Stacey Ferguson) of the Black Eyed Peas. She’s the first one to be credited. Crazy, huh?

Blair Underwood, Christine, and SVU

I can’t remember the first time I saw Blair Underwood in something, but I’m sure it must’ve been in the 80’s. Based on his IMDB listings, it was probably in The Cosby Show as Denise’s (Lisa Bonet) friend.

It’s been fun to see him back on TV recently in episodes of The New Adventures of Old Christine as the object of a huge crush of Christine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the ~~older~~ ~~more mature~~ older Christine. And then, in the same week (maybe it was the same night?) that he was very worthily playing the object of said crush, he shows up on an epidsode of Law and Order: SVU in what ended up being a very creepy and disturbing ending for his character.

Facts of Life Theme Song

Since it’s been stuck in my head since my last post, I figured I’d make you suffer along with me. Actually, I really like this theme song, and it’s fun to see all of the characters again. Jo (Joanna Marie Polniaczek—and I remembered all of that, except for the spelling of the last name—scary) was too, too cool. If only I had the The Facts of Life – The Complete First & Second Seasons, I could see it whenever I wanted! One of these days.

And go here for fun quotes from the show. My favorite was Mindy Cohn’s character Natalie saying, “Who wants to be a skinny pencil? I’m happy being a magic marker! ” Have I mentioned my great love of Sharpies?

Kim Fields is Pregnant

I loved the Facts of Life (and immediately the theme song is now playing in my head), and the friendship between Natalie and Tootie was particularly fun. The two younger girls always wanting to be cool and fun like their older roommates was something I could relate to.

Well, one of those young girls is soon to be a mommy! Kim Fields, who played the adorable Tootie so perfectly, is due to have a baby in May.

Fields and Morgan, 30, a Broadway actor, have been together “a couple of years” and decided this summer to have a child. “We were on the subway one day and Chris said, ‘I’m ready to start our family,’ ” Fields says. “It was beautiful and I started to weep.”
