Just Crimp It with a Crimping Iron

Monday, May 8th, 2006

crimpiron.jpg BIG hair was big fashion in the 80s, and I admit to using a crimping iron on my hair now and then, especially when I was headed out for a night out clubing at hot spots like “Spit” in Orlando.

My hair is very fine and back then, very, very long, so it usually took me about an hour to crimp my hair. But, I thought I looked great. One good thing still, though, about crimping irons is that for those with super fine hair who also live in humid climits, you don’t have the same issues as you do when you curl your hair and then five minutes after you walk out the door it is as straight as a board.

Believe it or not, hair crimping is not necessarily totally out of style these days. I even found a number of articles on line about it: To Crimp or Not to Crimp; How to Use a Crimping Iron; and Big Hair.

Strawberry, Watermelon, Bubblegum…

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

I was “just a kid” in 1980, and in between blistering my hands on playground equipment and going on endless “expeditions” in my back yard, I pined for the Coolest Status Symbol EVAR.

That’s right, Lip Smackers lipgloss. I desperately wanted Lip Smackers. Every girl who was of any importance at all had Lip Smackers. The more tubes of tasty gloss you could boast, the cooler you were. It doesn’t take much to make a 9 year old happy. It doesn’t take much to make a goofy teen happy either. And best of all? You can still buy all those wonderful Lip Smackers products, from the tube gloss to the roll-on gloss, and a veritable banquet of new products. So the next time you find yourself in the Beauty Aisle, take another look at the colorful ‘youth’ products. You just might find one of your nostalgic products on the shelf.

Fashion Forecast: The 80s are Hot!

Flats at Target.com

What was hip in the 80s is hot once more. A look at the fashion that’s happening and practical this year:

Flats - They’re comfy, cute and go with any outfit. “Whether you’re spending $15 at Target or $150 at Anthropologie, the trend is colors, cutouts and sweet, flirty rounded toes.”

Toeless tights - Whether you choose black or turquoise and stripes, short or long, update your wardrobe with these inexpensive pieces. “Short ones are best worn so they end at the widest point of the calf; long ones should extend to halfway between there and the ankle bone.”

Long shirts - Belly-baring shirts are so yesterday. “This year, the shirts are hip-length – even long enough to come over the top of your low-rise jeans. The key to pulling these off is that whatever’s underneath cannot, I repeat, cannot be too tight or you risk rollover. Keep the shirt loose – but not baggy. Since the shirts hit at the hip, they run the risk of accentuating your widest point. Two possible solutions: Wear a shrug, or cropped cardigan, to draw the eye up, or wear a wide belt over the T-shirt at the waist.” Wide belt, you say? More of the 80s flavor!

Accessories - Thick belts or really thin loop belts. Drop earrings. Bangles. These are the accessories to watch out for this year.

Bubble skirts - “…this season’s bubble-style skirts can be flattering to any figure. Stay away from the impractical poufs that barely cover your bum. Instead, opt for mid-thigh to knee-length ones with a subtle bubble.”

I’m sure the young(er) fashionistas at the local mall will have their own unique ways of adapting these new trends. Something to keep an eye out for. ;)

George Clooney Hates 80’s Fashion

Monday, February 13th, 2006

Apparently, one of George Clooney’s regrets in life is starting his career in the 1980’s because he feels that it was “the worst decade in fashion history.”

Gasp!

Bad fashion in the 80’s? But … how could he possibly not love balloon pants and shoulder pads?

It baffles the mind.

Clooney, who has long been considered to be one of Hollywood’s sexiest men, said that the balloon pants and shoulder pads that were so popular in the 1980s would ‘haunt’ him for the rest of his life.

“It’s unfortunate that (I started my) career in the ‘80s, which somehow was the worst fashion period of all time. Big balloon pants and shoulder pads will come back to haunt me for the rest of my life,” Contactmusic quoted him, as saying.

Poor George. Haunted by the 80s.

An Ode To 80s Fashions: Neon Shoelaces

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

Oh, wonderful fashion. No other decade will ever match the flair of the 80s.

One absolutely crucial fashion accessory was neon shoelaces. If you didn’t have these, you were socially exiled.

You absolutely had to have at least three pairs in your shoes. Neon yellow and green were a must, and the third pair could either be orange or pink.

I wish these would come back into fashion. I would so be wearing them every day.
