So, you were afraid that of all of the fine 80’s fashion that IS making back to our department store shelves, the legwarmers weren’t going to be one of them, weren’t you? Well, fear no more. Just in time for the winter (I think it’s gonna look and feel like winter around here at some point), some furry legwarmers for your comfort. Yes, this is the country we live in, where shave off all of the God given warm fuzzy hair on our legs just to replace it with some mail-order hair.

The heels in this photo are looking awfully 80’s-ish as well, don’t you think?

Flashdance Fashion is Back

Am I the only one noticing the Flashdance inspired shirt making a comeback? Crazy.

Did we learn nothing from our fashion mistakes of the 80’s? Of course, the college freshman I recently spotted sporting this fashion wasn’t yet conceived when this style was born.

Yikes! I’m starting to sound like one of those old fogies.

Vintage 80s Clothing

The first time I went into a vintage clothing store and realized that much of the merchandise for sale was once in my own closet, well, let’s just say, it was an eye-opener. I felt gray hairs immediately sprouting on my head as I browsed the racks.

Orange Oompa Loompa

Golden could well be an apt description of the 80s- not just in terms of wealth, but also in looks. The well-tanned body was prized, and no one was much concerned with things like skin cancer. The hapless souls who attempted to use self-tanners instead of laying out in the sun or spending hours in the salons, didn’t have a lot of product options to choose among. The only one I remember seeing on the shelf by all the glorious yummy coconut-scented oils, is QT.

Unless you were somewhat orange-colored naturally, there was absolutely no way you could use QT and not look like you’d fallen into a dye vat. Abe Gardea writes:

As Jeremy searched for the best self tanning lotion he went through all kinds of trial and error tests. The first one he managed to discover was the old Coppertone QT ? Quick Tanning Lotion. He knew that Coppertone was one of the best brands in tanning for a very long time and that QT was the first ever self tanning lotion, introduced in 1960. He decided that if it was the first it must be the best. He was wrong, as anyone who has ever seen the results of QT can attest to. This stuff turned him as orange as an Oompa Loompa.

Coppertone introduced the first consumer sunless tanning lotion into the marketplace in the 1960’s. This product was called “Quick Tan” or “QT”. It was sold as an overnight tanning agent, and other companies followed with similar products. Consumers soon tired of this product due to unattractive results such as orange palms, streaking and poor coloration. Because of the QT experience, many people today still associate sunless tanning with fake-looking orange tans.

In today’s cancer-conscious market, you can find many products for sunless tanning which work far better than QT ever did, for skin tones of all types, as well as sunscreens. You can even buy an airbrush tanning machine!

Friendship Bracelets

Anyone looking at the youth in the 80s probably didn’t notice how many were wearing bracelets of string and yarn around wrists and ankles. Friendship bracelets were quite the rage for a while, and as with all fashion, faded into the background again. These bracelets ranged from a simple braid, to complex weaving complete with beads. Many of us who made them felt rather proud to create something in between.

If you would like to make one of these for yourself or a friend, there are a few tutorials online.

You can also purchase a Klutz book which has instructions, floss and beads, and a place to attach your bracelet while making it.

Jelly Sandals

Fashion was definitely something I was mostly clueless about during the 80s, but there were some things even I knew were the In Thing. Memorable were the jelly sandals. I coveted jelly sandals. Some girls had a variety in their closet from which to choose. They came in all sorts of colors and a few different styles. It didn’t really matter which one you wore though, unless you also wore socks (uncool) your feet would be a stinky sweaty mess by the end of the day.

If that oh-so-glamorous thought appeals to your senses, you are in luck. Jelly sandals appear to be back in demand.

Ray-Ban Coolness

Ray-Ban sunglasses, especially the type worn in Risky Business, were super cool. In fact, Ray-Ban is still one of the top sun glass manufacturers today.

Isn’t Tom Cruise still wearing these more than 20 years later?
