Well friends, I hate to say it, but this is the last post for The 80’s Club. Not sure if forever, but for now. So, I thought I’d leave you with what is by far one of my favorite 80’s bands, Bon Jovi. The video is fantastic, if not a mite frightening. I mean, big hair I remember, just not quite that big. And of all of the 80’s fashions that seem to be making their way back into our stores, man leggins need not be one of them.
Thanks so much for reading here, for remembering with me, for commenting, and for making this a fun experience. All the best to you. :D
Okay, so only now as a parent of potty trainers do I realize that the title of this song sounds like something I would tell my potty-training kids before going to bed.
I asked my friend Jackie (who happens to have been my friend since the mid-80’s) what her favorite 80’s video is. Without hesitation, she says:
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. It is the epitome of the 80’s videos. Big hair, flourescent clothing, fingerless gloves, the big white t-shirts with the big black letters, the blacklight with the neon colors, all of it. It’s awesome….so radical (that last bit was just for me, I think. ;) ).
So, consider this our entry into the 80’s video time capsule. Anything anyone would ever need to know about 80’s fashion, including the bandana headband, can be found in this video. Enjoy.
We’ve been borrowing my sister’s PS2 and her Dance Dance Revolution. The game has a pretty good mix of songs to “dance” to, some of them from our favorite decade. (The 80’s, in case a few of you are new here or just aren’t paying attention. ;) ) A few of them even have the videos to go with them, including Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, and Lipps Inc.’s Funkytown.
Here’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun via YouTube. Annie Potts’s character of Iona in Pretty in Pink always reminds me of Cyndi Lauper in this video. Enjoy. :)
Looking to bring a little 80’s into your Valentine’s Day? Well, you can start with this Pure 80’s Love collection. I actually own this one, and it is fantastic. (Did I really just admit that?) And now it is streaming through the house, because there are just too many good songs on it not to listen to it RIGHT NOW.
Anyway, fun album. Tell me the truth, how long before these songs are appearing on the oldies stations? Don’t tell me that they’re on there already, please. Seriously, don’t tell me.
Have you seen this 80’s lyrics quiz yet? I’d taken it once before, but, as with most things these days, I don’t think I remembered anymore on it this time than I did the first time!
My final score was 96. I blame a few on spelling errors, a few on those “Dang it, I know it but I can’t come up with it!” moments, and a few that I never would have gotten. Go ahead and take it and head to the comments to let me know how you did!
I don’t often watch The Today Show anymore, my mornings these days are filled with cartoons on PBS or homeschooling. The other morning, though, I was able to catch a few minutes of the show and caught John Mellencamp performing songs from his recent album, Freedom’s Road. You can watch the YouTube video below to see and hear Mellencamp chatting with Today Show host, Matt Lauer.
I think the bit that stole the hour, though, was the cameraman’s capture of Richard Simmons working out while watching Mellencamp perform. You’ve gotta watch it just to check out the glittery tank and the striped shorts, so very 80’s. I can’t say too much, though, the man does have better legs than me. Simmons was there to promote his upcoming hearing to try to get more mandatory Phys.Ed. in the schools as an attachment to the No Child Left Behind Act. The fact that he adjusted himself while they were taping kinda stole the show, but I think it’s no more scandalous than what you’d experience sitting around with guys watching the big game, ya know?
You can check out that video below…
If you just can’t get enough of John Mellencamp, click on over to his site and you can listen to AM (all Mellencamp) streaming radio. Enjoy.
The Police are slated to reunite for a performance at this year’s Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 11th, and that will be my reason for watching the awards show. I’m not usually one to sit through these types of programs, but you can bet my butt will be planted to watch The Police! Or maybe I’ll just pretend to jam with them. I’ve been playing Message in a Bottle a bit on Guitar Hero II; it’s like I’m part of the band already. ;)
There’s even a rumor of them going on tour a bit this year. How much would you pay for a ticket to see this classic band, in what possibly is a once in a lifetime opportunity?
Ever since someone mentioned going to an 80’s party, I’ve started planning my own in my head. I mean seriously, how awesome would that be?
I was looking for some tunes for the party, and came across this 80’s Pop Hits music box set at Amazon for 14 bucks! woo hoo! You know, in case you got rid of all your 80’s cassettes and records, or no longer have a tape deck or turntable in/on which to play them. :)
What tunes would be must-haves for your 80’s bash?
I got a chance to get out for a bit today, and I took the opportunity to call up Bald Man and get out for lunch. Just the two of us. It was fantastic.
Anyway, as most of you probably don’t know, Bald Man loves to sing. As you probably also don’t know, he’s aurally challenged (read as: doesn’t really know whether or not he’s in tune when he’s singing). It is a fact that he’s well aware of, so I’m not outing him here or anything. Or maybe I am, but he can take it. :)
Anyway (wow, I say that a lot)…..we were stopping for coffee before our lunch date was over, and he was singing kinda. He made some comment about how he could still get on American Idol and we made a little joke about the girl this season who auditioned KNOWING that she couldn’t sing. Did you see her audition? It was her grand idea to be the first American Idol who couldn’t sing, and who they taught to sing.
I said something to the effect of, “Yeah, an American Idol who can’t sing.”
Bald Man’s reply, “Two words for you…..Milli Vanilli.”
Heh, yeah…I’m sure Simon Cowell would have had a field day with them. But I did love that Girl You Know It’s True album. I have it on cassette. :) I think I even did a karaoke bit to it in high school. I seem to remember singing it at a pool party. Now, I just get Blame it on the Rain stuck in my head when it’s, well, raining.
And now, for your 80’s flashback pleasure, Blame it on the Rain by Milli Vanilli. Thanks, YouTube. :)
