80s Baby Boomers
I’m right on the end of the baby boomer generation, often referred to as the X generation. I just missed it by “this” much. Still, one of my all time favorite movies from 1987 is Baby Boom, staring Daine Keaton and Sam Shephard.
One of the issues that starts to come out in this movie is the big lie women where trying to believe that you could have it all – motherhood, a challenging career, and a loving husband. Now, granted, it’s no big surprise that somehow things work out for our heroine in this movie, but still, at this point, women where starting to wake up to the fact that (a) they couldn’t necessarily have it all and (b) they shouldn’t necessarily have to do it all.
This was the beginning of a switch in attitudes that it was okay for mom to be “a mom” rather than have to be a top executive of a fortune 500 company and a mother/cook/chauffer and a sexy wife.
