The 80s Club

The Internet Society has a nice long article all about the history of the internet, from its earliest inception on through modern times. As a pseudo-geek married to a geek, I found it to be an enjoyable read and quite informative. A couple excerpts related to the 80s:

 I love being able to tell people that my husband actually met and shook hands with Johnny Depp. Seriously! Of course, it was Johnny Depp senior, the father of actor Johnny Depp. My husband met him at an engineering conference in South Florida awhile back and said he looks like an older version of his son.

If you like bare-chested, whip-cracking, virile handsome men with an attitude, chances are you liked Crocodile Dundee. Played by Paul Hogan, Dundee ends up in the Big City. This Aussie is a fish out of water, but that doesn’t stop him from keeping his cool and staying on top of his game. While Falco was popular in Europe, the US only got one major hit from him: “Rock Me Amadeus.” Again, this is one of those songs you might get to hear on the occasional “one hit wonder” shows on the radio, or of course, you can follow the link to the album pictured and get a little taste it from Amazon.

Police Academy. A flick full of laughs, but definitely not one you could exactly call deep and meaningful. At least not with a straight face!

What do you get when you have two want-to-be cool but are so far from that boys, a couple of bras, and a Barbie doll? You get Weird Science (1985). And things get more than just a little weird in this movie, though it is funny and crazy and worth a watch, even on reruns on TV.
Kelly LeBrock becomes, Lisa, their dream woman and the result of their science experiment. She is also their liberator as they turn the tables on all the other kids who normally give them wedges.

Falcon Crest, USA 1981-1990: A CBS primetime soap opera about the fictional Falcon Crest winery and the family who owned it, set in the fictional Tuscany Valley of California. The series was very popular and a wine named Falcon Crest even went on the market. source wikipedia

I thought it funny that while doing a search on the phrase “get over yourself,” I should stumble onto this current pop group who have a single called, what else, but “Get Over Yourself.”
This phrase became really popular during the 80s, and for me, I first heard it while working at the Zoo Crew at Disney World. Most of the male Zoo Crew members (Zoo Crew referred to anyone working as a Disney entertainer) were gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but “Get over yourself,” tended to be their mantra, and soon I started hearing it everywhere.

Yesterday if you guessed The Breakfast Club, you were correct! This movie glorified teen angst and not much else as near as I can tell. That didn’t stop any of us from embracing it, identifying with the various characters, and wishing we too could be a bit more rebellious.

Just in case you had forgotten all about why you are glad to be far removed from the halls of high school, why not rent The Breakfast Club and take a couple hour trip down memory lane.
