Break Dancing Breaks Out

Break Dancing Breaks Out

Break dancing wasn’t new in the 80s, but it was the era that made it famous.
From the History of Break Dancing:
The harsh and foolhardy nature of the dance is almost a game of chicken against an assailant. The best breakdancer, in the early 1980’s, was often the best fighter or gang member on the street. [...]
This dance is never done on a soft surface. It emphasizes the rough, raw urban feel of fighting. As a consequence, several dancers have broken their necks, and one died notably in 1982, due to a breakdancing move gone wrong.
Breakdancing includes moving the feet sideways …read more

80s Shopping

80s Shopping

Here is some more 80s shopping. Not necessarily vintage stuff, but that may be good. You have to wonder who was wearing that vintage garb at one time, no?
These t-shirts, totes, and such are from the 80s Cartoon Site:

David, as in David Lee Roth

David, as in David Lee Roth

Early Van Halen fans will be familiar with Roth, and most people in the 80s were probably at least somewhat aware of the intense split between Roth and Van Halen. The last album he recorded with the group was 1984.
1984 is one of only two Van Halen albums that have sold over 10 million copies in the United States and it is considered a milestone in rock history. “Jump” was one of the biggest songs of 1984 and was on the ten most songs played on the radio that year. As a single, it sold over three million copies …read more

A Wild and Crazy Guy

A Wild and Crazy Guy

Okay, okay, this alumn came out in 1978, but it was soon followed by another wonderful comedy alumn and then loads and loads of movies. Let’s just say, the 80s were Steve Martin’s decade.
After A Wild and Crazy Guy, came The Steve Martin Brothers.
Then he had some so-so success with movies, some good, some not so good:
1982 Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid
 1984 The Lonely Guy
 1986 Little Shop of Horrors
 1987 Roxanne
 1988 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Steve Martin has a pretty decent web site I found while surfing around, so if you are a fan, you can keep up to date with his …read more

Endangered Species

Endangered Species

During the 1980s, many species became endangered enough to be put on the list of species protected by the Endangered Species Act. The totals rose from 49 species in 1980 to 112 species in 1989. Concern for destruction of habitat, and the welfare of species held in captivity, was and continues to be a passion for many people.

People from all walks of life, and passionate about any sort of pursuits, lend their support to many causes and philanthropic endeavors to protect endangered species. As I mentioned in a post elsewhere, Scarlet Quince (a cross stitch company) has …read more

Brad Pitt Another 80s Babe

Brad Pitt Another 80s Babe

Now we’re talking about a real babe! I gave Aneglina Jolie a little blog time, so of course, I have to give the same space to her slave boyfriend, Brad Pitt.
The above photo is from one of his zillion Internet fans sites, Brad Pitt Web, and like many of today’s super (duper) stars, he started getting some serious screen time in the 80s though 20+ years later his acting career is stronger than ever.
His 80s films include:
 1987 No Man’s Land
1987 Less Than Zero
 1989 Happy Together
1989 Cutting Class
Not really any of these are memorable, but they were the start …read more

Angelina Jolie an 80s Babe

Angelina Jolie an 80s Babe

Since Angelina Jolie is so much in the news these days, I thought it might be interesting to see where she was at and what she was doing during the 1980s. Well, of couse, she was born in 1975, so she literally was a babe, as in baby practically, when she had her first movie role as Tosh in Lookin’ to Get Out.

Before making any more movies, she pursued a modeling career and also appeared in a number of music videos for bands like The Rolling Stones and Meat Loaf.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman

Ms. Kidman is one of my favorite actresses of all time. I don’t remember her being in the movies until Days of Thunder (1990), but apparently she was quite busy during the 80s making films and tv movies (more than fifteen of them). Most likely I wasn’t aware of her work simply because much of it wasn’t a big hit in the U.S.

What is Nicole up to these days? In addition to recently completing three films, filming a fourth, and having three more lined up; the BBC posted this announcement:
Actress Nicole Kidman has confirmed she will marry …read more

Prince Pops Up

Prince Pops Up

Brooklyn Vegan reports on an unexpected treat from Prince at a free concert in Brooklyn:
When the show ended I worked my way back out. Then the encore started right about the time I got back to my blanket, and suddenly there was A LOUD ROAR. Everyone was going nuts. Somebody special was obviously on stage. I ran back to the fence and saw a lady in orange. I wasn’t sure who it was until I finally figured out there was a man in white to her left. Even from however-many-feet back I was, I knew immediately it was none other …read more

Salute to Dads!

Salute to Dads!

 Happy Father’s Day!
Out of all the 80s dads, who can’t but love Jack Butler in the 1983 picture, Mr. Mom?! Still hilarious today.
From Amazon.com: When Jack Butler (Michael Keaton) loses his job at an auto factory, he expects to quickly find another. But instead, his wife Caroline (Teri Garr) starts working for an ad agency and Jack ends up taking care of the house and kids. He soon runs afoul of shopping etiquette, a voracious vacuum cleaner, and he can’t even drop his kids off at school properly. He starts losing his pride and letting himself go. He stops shaving, …read more
