Tammy’s Final 80s Club Post

Tammy’s Final 80s Club Post

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to post one more time here on The 80s Club and say a brief good-bye as I turn from an 80s club blogger back to an 80s club reader. I am still blogging at b5media on the Jewelry and Beading Blog, but with my busy writing schedule of late, I’ve had to make some tough decisions about my direction. Something had to give other than my sanity.

Rock on,
Tammy

Warning…Baby!

Warning…Baby!

What started out as probably a good idea, okay, well, maybe not good but at least heart-felt were the “Baby on Board” warning signs. But eventually, these started popping up all over the place as did joke signs like “blonde on board!” and it sort of lost its significance. But you can still buy these today. The one pictured is from Saftey Central.
The Bad Fads Museum has this interesting tid bit about them: Like many things, the ‘BABY ON BOARD’ signs started off as a good thing and quickly became an annoying, gimmicky eyesore. The signs were originated in 1985 …read more

It’s the End of the World as We know it…

It’s the End of the World as We know it…

…and I feel fine. (REM, 1987)

As my time as a writer for The 80s Club comes to a close, I thought I would write a little something, rather than just disappear with no comment. I started writing for this blog as a fun side project, and it soon became very time intensive (that darned memory, it ain’t what it used to be. thankfully, the world has Google). The 80s were the decade of my teen years, and much loved, and I have thoroughly enjoyed this journey along memory lane. If nothing else, I have had …read more

Vintage 80s Clothing

Vintage 80s Clothing

The first time I went into a vintage clothing store and realized that much of the merchandise for sale was once in my own closet, well, let’s just say, it was an eye-opener. I felt gray hairs immediately sprouting on my head as I browsed the racks.
If you miss some of your old, now vintage clothing, you can still find some of them on line at Truffle Shuffle.
Like this Blonde t-shirt or Edward Scissorhands.

Red wine & intrigue

Red wine & intrigue

Images of red wine conjure up vignettes- a Tuscan villa, a platter of cheese, an evening spent in company of friends, the Godfather Trilogy. The Italian Mob just wouldn’t have that same refinement if they walked about in the movies holding a can of Schlitz.

Now, I realize that the first two movies of the trilogy were released prior to the 80s, and the third was released in 1990. Somehow, and maybe it was because of songs like ‘Red red wine’ by UB40, the Godfather movies seemed to just “fit” into the 80s.

Of course, it could just …read more

1988 and Toni Morrison

Author Toni Morrison’s popularity grew in the 1980s and eventually she won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988, for her novel Beloved. Some other titles you might recognize include: The Bluest Eye; Sula; Song of Solomon; Tar Baby; and Jazz.
From Wikipedia:

Minimum Wage

Minimum Wage

Photos like this from Chik-Fil-A give me not so fond memories of working at physically demanding jobs for minimum wage, which back in the 80s was $3.10.
While the minimum wage has gone up substantially, now to $5.15 an hours, it is still very hard to make any kind of living off of this sort of income. Plus, most jobs that pay this kind of wage are some of the toughest out there.
This is still an issue today, and Congress is still battling over it. From a recent article at CNN.com:
Pelosi also pledged to improve security, reduce dependence on foreign oil, maintain …read more

Johnny Depp Movies

Johnny Depp Movies

Here’s a little on the beginning of Johnny Depp’s movie career. After leaving television, he started making movies, and in the 80s we saw him in:
1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street
 1985 Private Resort
 1986 Slow Burn
 1986 Platoon

Another David!

Another David!

Today’s focus is on David Bowie. I do not recall when I first experienced the music of David Bowie, but I remember the first movie I saw in which he had an acting role – Labyrinth. The Goblin King. A very Hotty Goblin King. The sort of Goblin King that makes teenage girls wish they needed to descend into the Underworld on a rescue mission.

During the 80s, as cassette tapes became the preferred music format, some stores had big boxes of vinyl records sitting about here & there, full of random albums. Some great …read more
