The Wedding Singer, a New Musical
Broadway gets to celebrate the 80s with a new musical called “The Wedding Singer“, based on the 1998 movie of the same name. Songs and get-ups alike will be infused with the flavor of that fun- and color-filled decade.
All that big glam hair, those heavy metal power chords and monster ballads, the “greed is good” ethos, the fads (New Coke), fashions (parachute pants) and other mileposts of the era are amply on display in “The Wedding Singer”…
Like the movie, the stage musical, directed by John Rando, is set in 1985 where Robbie Hart (the winning Stephen Lynch) is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer/rock-star wannabe.
Also starring Laura Benanti as Julia Sullivan, the show recently finished a run at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater. I heard that Tina Turner, Billy Idol, Mr. T, Imelda Marcos and Cyndi Lauper are set to make “appearances” on the show.
Previews on Broadway will begin on March 30, 2006 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Opening night will be on April 27, 2006.
