9 to 5 (1980)

9 to 5 is another of my all-time favorite movies. Starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda, this hilarious comedy was a top grosser in its day, coming in at #3 in the charts in 1980. Anyone want to venture a guess at who held the number one and two spots?

Now, I didn’t actually see this movie until I was well into my teens, I was a little busy in 1980, what with being born and all, but it’s been one of my favorite films ever since I caught it on Cinemax … or was it HBO? Showtime? I forget. At the time, I think my favorite thing about the movie was the pot-enduced sequence where each of the girls fantasizes about the best way to go after their boss (played by Dabney Coleman). Lily Tomlin as Snow White is eternally etched into my mind, as is Dolly Parton’s theme song, which I’m currently singing as I type this. I even downloaded it off iTunes cause I love it so much.

These days, because I’m so much more serious and political-minded than I was … uh, a few years ago … my favorite thing about the film is its positive feminist message. Because kidnapping your male boss, and keeping him hostage with S&M accoutrements and garage-door technologies is what feminism is all about.

If you haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it. It’s currently sitting on my DVD shelf, along side one of my other favorite 80s films, Spaceballs, and it’s fun to watch no matter how many times I’ve seen it, which is a lot of times. ‘Cause I’m obsessive that way.
