Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

Another of those “all-time” favorite movies of mine is the 1988 comedy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which stars Steve Martin and Michael Caine as two con-artists working the same area. In the film, Michael Caine’s character has made a fine living from conning gullable – and very wealthy – women into sharing some of their wealth for his “charitable” causes.
Enter Steve Martin, a less sophisticated thief who’s more used to conning women out of $20 and the random meal. Though he presents little competition for Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine), Freddy Benson (Martin) is nonetheless an annoyance worth getting rid of. …read more

The New Wave and Fra Lippo Lippi

The New Wave and Fra Lippo Lippi

Fra Lippo Lippi, not Robert Browning’s but that New Wave/synth pop band from Norway which produced several hits back in the 80’s.
According to Wikipedia:
New Wave is a term that has been used to describe many developments in music, but is most commonly associated with a movement in American, Australian, British, Canadian and European popular music, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The genre was most popular during the 1980s, but became somewhat popular again during the 2000s.

Northern State University Has 80s Week!

Northern State University Has 80s Week!

This week is 80s Week at NSU, where students are having a grand old time. Today is “Saved By the Bell Night” – and I’m jealous!! What a great idea. My university never had anything this cool. I just went crashing at Princeton parties cause they had neat stuff like Rocky Horror themed parties (FUN!) Still can’t find my handcuffs, though…
But I digress.
Director of Student Activities Travis Sieber said about 12 people dressed up in 1980s fashions for the contest. Each person that participated was given an assortment of prizes, ranging from Rubik’s Cubes to Fun Dip candy.
“It’s something …read more

Punky Brewster Trivia!

Punky Brewster Trivia!

Here goes a question for all of you Punky Brewster fans. I used to watch this show religiously. In fact, I remember crying hysterically one day because they were playing a baseball game instead of the episode of PB that was supposed to air.
Hm.

An Ode To 80s Fashions: Neon Shoelaces

An Ode To 80s Fashions: Neon Shoelaces

Oh, wonderful fashion. No other decade will ever match the flair of the 80s.
One absolutely crucial fashion accessory was neon shoelaces. If you didn’t have these, you were socially exiled.
You absolutely had to have at least three pairs in your shoes. Neon yellow and green were a must, and the third pair could either be orange or pink.
I wish these would come back into fashion. I would so be wearing them every day.

Movies They Would Never Make Today: Soul Man

Movies They Would Never Make Today: Soul Man

It’s sad but true: America has a major stick up its butt.
That’s one reason 80s movie were so wonderful: nothing was taboo. The bad guys were always Russian—too bad if they didn’t like it—unlike today’s bad guys, who always have an accent you can’t quite place, so as not to offend anyone. Bah, humbug.
Now Soul Man…ah Soul Man. Apparently, racial prejudices are quite funny and entertaining, and this is the premise the movie is based on. And the movie RULES.

9 to 5 (1980)

9 to 5 (1980)

9 to 5 is another of my all-time favorite movies. Starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda, this hilarious comedy was a top grosser in its day, coming in at #3 in the charts in 1980. Anyone want to venture a guess at who held the number one and two spots?
Now, I didn’t actually see this movie until I was well into my teens, I was a little busy in 1980, what with being born and all, but it’s been one of my favorite films ever since I caught it on Cinemax … or was it HBO? Showtime? I …read more

The Rhymes of Debbie Gibson

The Rhymes of Debbie Gibson

Remember these lines?
I get lost
in your eyes
and I feel
my spirit rise
and soar
like the wind
is it love
that I am in…
How about these?
When the fear sets in
where the fire burns
where I find a place
where there’s nowhere to turn
when the evening sings
an eerie song
longing for the day
you say I’m wrong…
Well, those are the first stanza lyrics of Debbie Gibson’s Lost In Your Eyes and No More Rhyme respectively. (Yeah, I was typing those from memory!)
Though she was the Teen Pop Queen of the mid-80’s, I cannot really say that I was a Debbie Gibson fan but I really love the kind …read more

A Generation Defined?

A Generation Defined?

I came across this definition of Generation X on the Tewksbury Advocate:
Generation X: Children of the boomers, born in the late ’60s and ’70s. Brought up on TV, Atari and computers. They grew up in the “me” generation of the ’80s but are often stereotyped as cynical, alienated, over-educated, underachieving slackers who drank Starbucks coffee and had to work at McJobs.
Comments, Gen-Xers?

Never too late for E.T.

Never too late for E.T.

Honestly (for some reason) my parents failed to take me to the movies to watch E.T. during the film’s debut in 1982. While I was then only 9 and hence was too young to go to the movies alone, my family spent most of the 80s in the boondocks.
I remember wearing E.T. printed shirts though, while my more “civilized” classmates did nothing but brag about E.T.-this and E.T.-that in most of their conversations. (Okay, so it was a crime missing the most important movie of the decade.)
In 2000, E.T. was digitally enhanced and was re-shown in theaters (here …read more
